I've recently see Sam Mendes' Skyfall for the second time, and I now understand what the new XJ is all about. I wasn't too hot about this car when it got released, especially since I liked the X350/358 so much.

But seeing the car in the movie, it just looks mean and classy at the same time, and isn't it what a big Jag' is all about? Even the rear end which I initially found a bit uneasy seems to make sense, judging by how it helps the roofline. I've seen one in real life yesterday and all my gripes about this car were just... gone.

So even though I wasn't too sure about a car, seeing it in a James Bond movie made me like it. That makes a hell of a case for product placement!

Now if the next James Bond could feature a Panamera, maybe it would help convince me about it too, what do you say, Sam Mendes?

I kinda always liked this Jag.

And as for the Panamera, I've driven the Turbo model, and I loved it.

Its a sedan with power, its not exactly the BEST looking car, but I think it looks damn good.

The way I see it, this XJ is the successor to the last-gen Quattroporte. It's a big car that cleverly balances comfort and driving dynamics, looks beautiful yet still menacing without being over the top, and has more "soul" or "passion" in it than the Germans.

The new QP doesn't work as a true successor, because it left its elegance behind in its search for a more aggressive style. And stole its rear lights from a Ford Fusion.

The Jag, though, is able to pick up where the old QP left off. It's brilliant.

The rear's still quite a bit heavy..

I don't know how the XJ is to drive. Funny thing is, it appears they used a 3.0 diesel for the Skyfall movie!

I've driven an XF with that engine and... I hate to say it, but it's not half bad. It's actually quite good, the 400lb.ft of torque make the engine very impressive. Put it anywhere above 1 500rpm and it just goes! Plus, the gearbox isn't bad either. It's actually quite brilliant. Who would have thought?

In my fantasy world, I have a hard time debating whether or not I'd go for the Jaguar XJL(ong wheel base) or the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate.

I'd go for the Jag with my eyes closed. It's just another level of class. I'd be happy with just the 3.0 supercharged engine.

I've sat in one at the 2012 Canadian Auto Show, I really didn't want to get out. It was gorgeous inside, comfortable and quiet.

But that 6.2 V8 and all that room, man it would be tough.

Jag has a habit of designing cars that create controversy at first. Then, over the course of a few years, people change their minds as the rest of the industry makes their cars duller, clunkier, and less elegant.

The XJ-S and XK8/R had this effect. So did the Mark X/420G. Even Sir William Lyons thought the original E-Type wasn't pretty enough and wouldn't sell.
